Hello! Welcome to my latest art contest. I don't know what to put here in this intro bit...

The characters listed below belong to me, and are from my work-in-progress young adult novel that I am co-writing with my spouse-creature (who has an account on Gaia as michailv).

You automatically become cooler if you enter my contest. ninja

NEWS

So, the deadline is Monday! Yay! No set time, as long as it's in before I wake up on Tuesday, really.

Then I will need to take a couple of days to get judging done. So... let's go with Thursday, April 10 for the award announcement thingy. Let's say around 9 PM EST.

WIP announcement: If you submit your work-in-progress before the contest deadline, then you have until Wednesday, midnight EST, to get the final version in. If you don't manage to get the final in, your WIP may be counted as an entry, provided it's finished enough-- as in, recognizable character(s), at least. To submit a WIP, just post it in the thread and note that it's a WIP so I know about how many finalized entries to expect.

Rules:

1. This should be obvious, but all art submitted must be your own work. This means no stealing, no tracing or eyeballing, and so on. You will be disqualified if your entry is eyeballed-- this means very heavily referencing someone else's art, even if you aren't "tracing." Remember that stealing art is illegal as well as bannable, so please don't try it. T___T

2. Entries must depict one or more of the characters listed. Entries must be recognizable as my characters to be accepted.

3. No harassing anyone or putting down their art.

4. Any media accepted. The exception-- No photography or avatar/doll edits, please.

5. Entries should be submitted by the deadline.
5a. Deadline is subject to change if I feel that there are enough people who could use more time, or if something else unexpected arises. I will give as much notice as I can in this case.

6. An individual entry can only win one prize. (You are eligible to win more than one prize if you have submitted multiple entries, though. You just can't win twice with a single entry.)

7. By entering, you are agreeing to let me display your artwork on Gaia (with proper credit given, of course).

Hey, aren't some of these characters from your last contest? Why do they have different names now?

Yep, the names are different, the characters are the same. Why? Because at that point, the novel that the characters are from was in its earliest stages and the names hadn't been finalized yet, so I picked some placeholders.

I entered the last one, can I enter this one, too?

Of course!

Your reference avatars' clothing is ugly/the colors look terrible together! Can I change things?

Absolutely! Gaia avatars are limited, but I tried to give a rough sense of the kind of clothing and colors I am picturing. There are also some descriptions in the excerpts under the characters. But, please do consider the provided images as loose references and feel free to make changes. They are there as a sort of rough guideline, as I thought it might help.

What's with that post filled with scene excerpts?

Those are there to give you an idea of setting, and you are certainly free to depict any of those scenes! In fact, it would be pretty cool if you did. mrgreen

Do I have to draw from the excerpts?
Nope, not at all! They're just there in case you do need them or want to use them.

Is there a minimum number of entries needed for the grand prize to be given out?

No. I intend for all prizes to be given out, and I do not have a minimum number of entries needed for the grand prize to be awarded, or anything like that. However, in the event that there are no entries I feel are eligible for one of the lower categories, that prize will not be awarded and will instead be used for a new category.

I may add prizes and categories as needed, if I think of more categories or get more items.

What art styles/media do you like?

I like both CG and traditional media.

Any styles and media are okay-- be yourself! I want to see what makes your art unique. Be creative. Feel free to be serious or to enter a silly chibi if that's your style! Also, please feel free to take some artistic license with the character descriptions-- especially the clothing and hairstyles. I've tried to give some decent descriptions for those who prefer that, but I don't need you to stick to them exactly!

What will make your entry stand out? Creativity, composition, attention to detail, some indication of setting.

What kind of animals are on the islands?/Do they have pets and what kind?

Besides the birds, they would have:

some kind of monkeys
squirrely rodent things
lizards
weird insects
animals that would be on a beach, like crabs

Haven't really mentioned pets persay, but you're welcome to include something like that.
