defective's combos
a combo sharing and discussion thread
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

Why?
I've been sharing item combos in Nefret's Matches and generally lurking,
but I sometimes find weird combinations that don't fit the spirit of that thread.
I also wish that threads in the AT contained more discussion,
so this thread is going to hopefully have a bit of both.

What goes here?
Basically any interesting item combo, but especially ones that have unexpected effects.
For example:
A torso mod working as an unintentional arm cutter for a jacket with attached arm mods.

the halfbreed's balcony
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

Let's start with a simple one.

I'm talking about these:
User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image

The layering on these is really interesting.

User Image
The balcony is a really fun background choice by itself,
but it turns out that very few speech bubbles layer in front of it.
I found out this also extends to quite a number of foreground pieces like
User Image User Image
and many popular lighting effects like
User Image User Image .

Some smaller background elements are cut in an...interesting way.
As seen in my avatar, Faithful Rookie (data upload)User Image
loses its foreground swirls, leaving behind only the vertical lines of numbers.

Anyway, this prompted me to experiment a little more with this.

User Image
In the above example, it cuts out the foreground part of Luminous Warm Days,
Spirited 2020 Snowfriend Border, and The Uninvited Decay.

User Image || User Image
original || with halfbreed balcony
The halfbreed balcony cuts the 'path' layer from Kinokoyi's background,
exposing what I think might be the 'sketch' layer.
It's a cool effect; I think it looks quite artsy.
Note: Recolours of this background may not fare as well.

User Image
When a couple of different backgrounds are layered together,
there are often weird interactions.
Here you can see
User Image and User Image
doing what I call 'the weird window thing'.
Unusable at a glance, but it's not impossible to work with imo:

arm replacer madness
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

Disclaimer: Professional I am not; I have not tested every item in Gaia's database.

Now that's out of the way, let's talk about arm mods.
I like arm mods, even if they often can't equip arm bands and other details.
Arm mods themselves are fine and dandy.
But sometimes you get a nice waistcoat (or similar) that's stuck with a particular arm mod.
That limitation kind of bugs me, so I've been messing around.

Beat The Heat Torso

Beat The Heat was one of the first male torso mods for both humanoid bases.
It comes with a fixed arm mod, severely limiting its expression imo.
There's really only so many ways to work with such a static pose.
Anyway, I found that some arm mods can seamlessly override that:
User Image || User Image
Fennec Arms || Accel Arms
Instantly, there was more utility.
But what other arm mods work?
...
Well, I don't know for sure, but probably most passive arm mods work.
There aren't many that are bare enough to work with a torso mod,
but it's more than one, so I'd count that as a win.

Decayed For You Jacket

Remember that waistcoat I mentioned before? This is it.
Lop off those annoying arms and you have yourself a snazzy little vest.
Feel free to sub in some passive arms with white sleeves or something.
If you want to stay somewhat true to the original item, just with more options, try:
User Image
Valiant Snake Charmer

Apparently chest mods do weird things with this.
User Image || User Image || User Image
Warning Signs || I am Tired Uncle || I am Leorosa
User Image || User Image
I am Diva || Priestess of Aurelian

Most of them seem to just...chop off arms.
Doesn't seem like there's much utility, as passive arms completely replace originals.
And then there's Uncle...
...yeah, I don't know what to do with that.
Maybe if you had to cosplay having a big bite taken out of your arm?

ScapeGoat Shenanigans

Passive arm mods almost work as replacers here.
Almost.
Sometimes, it just cuts off the far arm.
User Image
+ Fennec Arms + Bewere cutter
None of Fennec Arms show on the avatar at all, while the Bewere cutter
removes the tattoos and most of the black magicky things coming off the arm(s).

Other times, it replaces only the far arm.
User Image
+ Roseus' Furtive Secret
Keeping the tats gives the impression that the far arm is partially made of magic.
So that's pretty cool.

In one particular case that I found, it actually works!
User Image
+ Zip It Shut, Shuck!
Kind of.
It really only works as User Image
and Zip Shuck fights for the same layer as Scapegoat.
If you're not mindful of the order, you'll get a stretch of C or Dark Elf skin.

Monstre Reve Noire Lantern

Another shenanigan-type replacer.
User Image
+ Zip It Shut, Shuck!
Nixes the near arm and ajoute the Zip Shuck arms.
Remaining far arm can be hard to see if you choose the right posing.
Addition of Bewere cutter defeats the whole point.

There are a few arm mods that cut off sleeves and can do the same effect as The Schoolboy's Style (Sleeveless scissors) User Image if you don't have that item. Ex:

User Image + User Image is another one. It's mostly a lot of experimentation or simply closing your eyes and letting your cursor land on two separate items, hoping they glitch in a way that's interesting. lol

Truer words have never been posted, and I think the number of weird (and not-so-weird) combos I've found and shared say way too much about my avatar making process. rofl

Thanks for the contributions! I knew about Swamplands Circe, but the rest are new to me, and very useful. I imagine that sometimes the arm mods would be able to cut stuff that the sleeveless scissors can't as well, like the Vulturine Gentleman jacket in your example - the sleeveless scissors don't seem to have any effect when I tried.

a thicc masc torso
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

It's your neighbourhood not-so-friendly Defective bringing you the newest in:
"Combos no one really needs but nonetheless exist!"

Here we have - ironically - a female base exclusive:
a thicc masculine torso.
User Image

User Image + User Image

Now, the regular old Smoking Dad bod on the male base is fine and dandy
but I wanted something with a little more definition in addition to the gut.
You know, something more retired fantasy warrior who spends too much time at the tavern
rather than irl dad manning the grill on a Saturday.
So along comes the female base and Leorosa to provide a little extra oomph.
User Image

As disgustingly proud as I am of this particular combination...
...this still does have a few issues.

Issue 1: Pec lines.
There are dark lines under the pecs that can't really be mussed with.
I choose to interpret them as funky shadows, but other interpretations are available.

Issue 2: Female base.
What's wrong with the female base? It's narrow.
That means a lot of arm mods are going to chop off half a pec,
or have zero shoulders,
or something.
If I sound like I have a grudge, that's only because I do.

Issue 3: Fighting layers.
That's right: Leorosa and Dad fight for the same layer.
Have fun shuffling them back and forth every time you equip another item.

Issue 4: Cutter usage.
May or may not be a problem depending on the user, but cutters are expensive,
and the ones needed to make this combo work are
User Image and User Image.
The axe cutter's prices and availability are truly horrific. emotion_skull
I guess you could keep the Leorosa body hair, but it'd have to be in a colour you can work with.
Now those are also pretty scarce and expensive...

Whether these limitations are worth working with is up to you,
but I for one am pretty pleased with what I managed to get out of it.

haircut for headmod
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

Hello hello, it's 2023, so let's bring this back.
I haven't really had any time to experiment with avatars lately,
so you get an old thing I discovered a while back.

Let me introduce you to a very special little item
with very odd little layering:
User Image

Just looks like a regular old hood, doesn't it.
But really, I wouldn't have called attention to it if it was, so let's bring on the weirdness!

Oddity #1: Cuttable.
It's modifiable by Bewere cuts.
Strangely enough, Bewere of Wolf, Bewere of Me and Your Angel
all nix the front layer of the hood, leaving behind a red splotch and the trailing scarf.

Oddity #2: Cutter-esque.
This hood modifies specific full head mods.
User Image___User Image
In both cases, the hood takes out a good portion of the hair.

Oddity #3: Cuttable 2 Electric Boogaloo.
The trailing scarf part of this hood can be cut by certain arm mods.
Which arm mods? I can't be bothered to test every arm mod on Gaia, so here's a few:
Strength, Warworn Celt, Tower Mage, Disguise of Shadows, His Reign, Justice,
Party in the Ashes, Tower Mage.......and so many more.
There's also just as many arm mods that leave the trailing scarf intact, such as:
Rat of Yuera, The Hermit, Underworld Heartbeat, A Wyld Horse, Polaris Complex,
Dark Thirds God/dess, etc.

You know what they say...
Once is nothing notable, twice is a coincidence, but three times?
Three times nets you something fun.

By combining all three oddities, we get a head mod cutter that can be very close to invisible:
User ImageUser ImageUser Image
Useful, really, if you want to use one of these head mods but also don't want half your avatar to be hair.

cat tower coat reimagined
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

So this is already something I update very infrequently, but happy (belated) Gaiaversary.

I've never paid the coat from The Cat Tower much attention personally;
nothing personal, but it just didn't interest me as much as say...
...the background and foreground poses in that item, or even the legmod (shorts good).

So it comes as no surprise that I was not really expecting anything to interact with the coat --
besides the established bewere etc. cut to nix the axe, anyway.
Well, apparently some arm mods cut the far arm (the one that would be holding the axe).
This gives the impression that the coat is hanging off one shoulder and maybe folded back on itself.
However, there is a slight issue...

User Image
In the above image, you can see the glitch cut in action with the Son of Rordis arms, which is cute and all,
but note the white print visible against the purple backdrop--
That's the print from the jacket, and it does not get cut with the rest of the sleeve.
Honestly it's such a small thing that I'd consider it a non-issue.
It would likely get lost with a proper background anyway.

The other issue with this glitch cut is the typical trial and error involved to figure which items trigger it.
So far I've found the armmods from the following items work:
Fennec Arms (incl originals), Phantom Aka Tommy, Northern Star Sash, Son of Cordis (+ recolours),
Dearly Damned (and associated items such as Roseus' Secret, Serotina's Prayer, etc.),
Blood Wolf, and undoubtedly many many more.

There is, admittedly, something...else.

User ImageUser Image
Yeah...there are a couple of arms I found that didn't cut the far arm. They didn't even do nothing like the rest.
Prince of the Dragonflight and Peace and Long Life both seem to cut the near arm,
because they just had to be special, I guess?
Just like the glitch cut for the far arm, the pattern of the coat is left untouched.
There might be other armmods that do this near arm cut, but frankly I'm too scared to go looking for them.

Are either of these glitch cuts useful? I have no idea!
Are they neat? I have no idea! x2!
Here they are anyway.
I hope it was mildly entertaining if nothing else.

Alrighty-righty. I know what you're thinking - yeah, the Tsunbani no Monogatari item has a cape. So what?
But consider this an alternative cape for when you don't want a big puffy thing:
User Image
The top comes with a cape element, but seemingly no way to isolate it.

Well. Lo and behold, there's a glitch for that.
User ImageUser Image
Coming up first are heavyweights the Warning Sign torso twins.
They need no introduction; their weird cutter-esque properties are pretty well-known at this point.
If you're interested in freeing the melons, see Removing The Tape for more info.
Moving on...
User ImageUser ImageUser Image
Aura || I am Leorosa || Guardian Spirit
As you can see, it looks like a select few torso mods can also perform this cut.
(As usual, this isn't an exhaustive list. I just tested whatever I could think of off the top of my head.)

Now I'm sure you've already spotted the several problematic pixels in most of these images...
Yes, there is a gap.
But, between the addition of a top and arm mods, there won't be too much of a problem in a full avatar.

painful socks*
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

Painful Blessings. Painful Blessings socks.
User Image

You know, at first I thought these were just normal socks.
But they're not. They're weird.
I don't know how or why, but these things have cutter properties when paired with certain leg mods.
The results are...a mixed bag.

User Image
Take this example with the Purrsuasion Play (his legs) for example.
The way the legs have been cut by the underlying socks (which we can't see)
gives the illusion that it nixes half of one leg and twists the other around.

User Image
Here's another example with the Sentinel of Light legs.
Half of one leg is (once again) gone and the other ends just around the ankle.
We get to see part of the underlying socks in this one due to the legmod's transparency.
Maybe there's some fun stuff that can be done there; I don't know.

Up until this point, the cutter property of these socks don't seem to have much utility,
which brings us to the last example I have lined up...

User Image
This is Hidden Aggression's leg mod being cut by the socks.
As you can see, this gives the illusion that the legs end in adorable little booties.
Is it the most useful? No, probably not. But it's kind of cute, so it's got that going for it.

Alrighty. So we've looked at a few examples of leg mods here.
But the real question is if there's any way to tell if a leg mod will interact with these socks or not.

Good(?) news!

I've found that it's mostly leg mods with some kind of transparency that work.
By no means exhaustive, but Mods for All Skins has a list of these.
There are even some skirts (e.g. Wish Upon The Fallen) that work; it's kind of wild.

wicked sisters' grasp
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

It's pretty well-established that some arm mods and companions have trouble co-existing --
Most of the time, this means the arm mods cut companions completely.
Completely illogical, if you ask me, but them's the breaks.
Well, on the female base, there is an interesting variation to this phenomenon.

I'll be focusing on one particular companion pose + the arm mods that interact, because I think the cut is neat.
(I'll be bringing up some weirder cuts and interactions another time. More trial and error needed there.)
Anyway, let me introduce to you the wicked sisters 2 from Enchanted Book:
User Image

These are two very special ladies, because a handful of arm mods I've tested perform a strange cut on them.

User Image
In the example above, I used the arm mod from Unwholesome Child.
The result is that the sisters are completely cut...except for the arms clinging to your avatar.
The first thing I thought of is that these disembodied arms could be used in a horror theme,
but I'm sure other possibilities exist.

Now, don't go thinking that Unwholesome Child is the only arm mod that does this.
With this particular companion, there's a whole slew of arm mods that have this same effect.

Here are some of them:
Gladsome Sol, Beastly, But Make It Fashion!, Djinni Dreams, Cryo Bout It,
Hitchhhiker's Final Destination, I Am Uncle, There Is Nothing, Overdramatic, Jaeger's Chains,
Miss Witch, Master Wizard, Severed Bloom, Young Bud, The Sorcerer, Celestial Nemesis,
...and many more.

I'm not sure if there's any rhyme or reason as to which arm mods have this effect, to be honest.
Quite a bit of trial & error will have to be done to draw up a comprehensive list.

╔══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
note: this only works on the female base. on the male base, this combo leaves no trace of the sisters.

plain horror trope border
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

Now, now, I usually don't do this but...

GOTCHA YOU SON OF A--

You have no idea how long it took to pin down this relatively simple glitch.
It drove me absolutely mental.
Ok, deep breaths. So I first discovered this interaction while working on a new avatar.
I had no idea what set it off or how, but for some reason, the...eyes(?) on the Horror Trope Z overlay
would occasionally glitch out on the avatar I was working on.
Obviously, I tried to work backwards at first...and it worked! Until I reached the last 20 items.
Then, no matter which items I removed, the 'eyes' would reappear and never glitch off again.

Ok, I figured it just needs 20 items layered on an avatar before it glitches itself out of existence.
But that wouldn't make a very useful or versatile glitch, would it?
It's certainly not something I could post about, and I wanted to make it work reliably.

So I kept trying on and off, going back to that saved combination of about 20 items.
No luck.

Today, out of pure annoyance, I decided to start from scratch.
Just Invisibility Cloak and the border and to start with, so that I could see exactly what I was doing and--
User Image
Boop.
Just like that.
You are kidding me. It was that simple all along?

So I tried again. Invisibility Cloak. Horror Trope Z border. Yep.
And then I tried the other way around and--- OH.
User Image
Yeah, so it doesn't work if you put Horror Trope Z on first.
That's what's causing the instability.

A bit of a rambly post before the year closes out, but yeah.
Plain Horror Trope Z border for all, I guess.
Just gotta lay down Invisibility Cloak as a foundation and hope nothing jostles it out from under the overlay.

╔══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
note: this works on both bases and all recolours as far as i can tell.
