A dark and moonless night finds you in a strange part of town that you have never visited before. The crisp October air has taken on a chill, as you wander the unfamiliar streets. Was this the way you meant to walk when you left for your stroll? You are feeling fuzzy on the details, and are not even sure why you decided to take a walk in the first place. Something made you want to leave, you suppose. The walk hasn't been unpleasant, just somewhat out of the ordinary. Halloween is near, after all, and Gaians know to be wary around Jack's time of the year. Strange things happen around October. But you shrug it off. Strange can be fun, after all. Suddenly, the only streetlight on this abandoned stretch of road winks out, leaving you in total inky darkness. The single source of light in your field of view seems to be a faint glowing just around the corner.
You choose to investigate, perhaps against your better judgement. You round the corner and are met with what looks like a glowing chalk circle with various arcane looking symbols and shapes written in to make a complex pattern. The middle of the circle features a fractured heart shape. Your eyes sweep across the somewhat beautiful piece of complex work. Hang on, something isn't right. There's a piece of the circle that hasn't been finished. The symmetry is off. The discarded piece of glowing chalk on the ground calls to you. It compels you to complete the work. You could finish the circle if you choose. Instinctively, you snatch up the chalk and rush to right the problem, clumsily filling in the missing piece of the circle. You release a sigh of relief when you lean back to peer at your handy work. It's almost perfect, but the fracture in the heart isn't quite right. You take up the chalk and carefully connect the lines, just before you are about to take your hand away, you manage to knick you knuckle on a surprisingly sharp brick. A single drop of blood smears on the circle.
Your newly drawn lines fill in with light, and the entire circle brightens. You take a step back, suddenly blinded by the white shinning light. A humming can be heard and in a flash, a swirling pattern replaces the location of the circle on the wall. You feel some heat on your face. It feels nice compared to the chill October night. You take a step towards the wall, and tentatively hold a hand out to touch it. Your fingertips slip right through. Could this be some kind of portal? You reach forward again, going to your elbow this time, before a thought strikes you. This is a horrible mistake. Gaians shouldn't just walk through portals this close to Halloween.
You begin to retreat when a strong arm grabs your wrist and yanks you through the portal. Not expecting such force, you are thrown off balance and land rather unceremoniously on your face in the mysterious other side of the portal. "Sorry darling," comes a cheery voice, as the person who you can only assumes pulled you into this place, starts to help you back to your feet. "You were holding up the portal." You mumble some thanks, and look up to see the owner of the cheery voice--a one eyed succubus in a stunning evening gown grinning widely at you.
You look around, feeling completely baffled to find yourself in what appears to be a quaint cafe. Well, at first look it's quaint, at second look you notice quite a few fire motifs. And some blood.... and quite a few demons... What is this place?
"Welcome to Hell!" chirps the strange woman.
You sputter. Hell? The demon girl laughs, and claps a hand on your back.
"Don't worry! You're in the Heart Break Cafe! We have a special permit to be here this year." She blinks her one large eye at you and wiggles her eyebrows. Was that supposed to be a wink?? "Have a seat!" she exclaims, beaming, "We're the best cafe in all of hell!" She motions to a number of maids and butlers bustling around the dining area. "We're here to serve!"
You take a look back at the open portal, but decide you might as well enjoy a few hours in the cafe. After all.... you are already here. What the hell?
Welcome, welcome my darling guests to the 2017 Halloween Heart Break Cafe! It is I, your mistress of scaremonies, Yeata Zi! I am pleased you made it through the portal to find our little cafe! You are a talented artist! I had my minions hide half finished portals all around Gaia, but yours was truly well done! Hell isn't as bad as everyone says it is! It's actually quite toasty, and all the demons make for talented cafe staff!
We have some seasonal fare, so why not have a seat and enjoy something pumpkiny! I am told we have a few Halloween treats (and tricks) as well in store for our loyal patrons. So step in and enjoy a seat by the hellfire. Are you more of a pumpkin spice latte person or do you prefer hot apple cider? So much cafe to enjoy!
So sit back, order a drink, play some games, and please remember to tip your waiters and waitresses! Have something sweet on us!
