Merandii: the world of wonder. An ancient continent where its inhabitants once thrived and functioned through the use of magic, but only a hundred years ago the age of steam exploded into action. Years of study into magic was dwarfed by the quick capability the new technology had provided. With the shift people's lives have been vastly improved with the accessibility of power, and as a result the great capability of magic was overwhelmed and left limited in power used only by a minority. Consumed by the technology the people expanded their capability from simple engines to complex engineering . Now, in the year 1214, war arises.

Four years prior SerpereƱa, a country of desert dwellers, had discovered a large crevice in the dunes and discovered something profound. An unknown entity long ago had placed in this niche strange technology and machinery never before conceived. Machines of flight equipped with deadly weaponry all prepared ready for use as if they were waiting for people of the land to discover and use them to conquer and control. This message was clearly followed as Serperena started their invasion.
With these newly discovered weapons their neighboring state of Pacergni was brought to its knees as the flying ships brought chaos and destruction throughout. With cities leveled and their military devastated, Pacergni was forced to surrender and face the ordeal of military occupation. The first acts of war now reported, the remaining countries gather to discuss the new threat SerpereƱa has become and how to could stop it. Meanwhile a group of people in occupied Pacergni gather to discuss in a tavern the change in rule and how they are going to respond in accord.

Map of Merandii

Simplified Map (mind the text)

Serperena: Dry, arid, the land is an endless desert. Scattered throughout are spontaneous plateau formations in which people had settled due to their curious capability of maintaining fertility for cultivation. Even with these hotspots the majority of the population works on manual labor, craftsmanship or trade depending on a fixed city life or a roaming, nomadic lifestyle. Famous for is it's advancements in smithing; Serperenian blacksmiths are able to forge the most refined and resilient tools and blades. With the finest armaments of war, Serperena funds one of the strongest and largest armies.

Que-Terra: The country of the northwest is temperate and mainly scattered plains and forests, avoiding the tundra fate of the neighboring Prointum with the influence of its expansive coast. The east hosts most of the little mountains Que-Terra has, but from these mountains start a wide expansive river network that branches throughout. The Que-Terrans trade through these routes and use the most out of irrigation to create large acres of varied cash crops. Goods gained from the savvy are traded all over Merandii.

Pacergni: A warm climate. Pacergni is endless, lush plains with the occasional forest and lake. Rich in nutrients, the land is fertile and very worthwhile for agricultural work. The two primary goods harvested are grains and hops: driving factors to the leisured lifestyle of the inhabitants.
(Note: the large town if Initium will be the starting place for the RP. Most characters should end up here at some point)

Prointum: A frigid, cold, cruel tundra with dotted mountain ranges throughout. Many dangerous creatures live and prey on the herbivorous animals that scrounge and migrate. Game is a popular source of food and entertainment and cultivation of prized, potent fruits produce sustenance. Deep in the mountains, various ores and gems hide beneath the towering monoliths waiting to be claimed by the local populace.

Ciendia: If not for the advancements of technology, the main aspect noteworthy about Ciendia is the rolling hills of the land, but Ciendia is known for its sprawling and expansive cities and towns built on top of the leveled hilltops. Each city is filled with technological wonders to maintain and expand innovation. As a result of the expansion some parts of the land have been depleted causing some negativity from those in proximity to the loss.

Maeguelium: An endless forest, it seems that the land occupying Maeguelium has willingly worked to keep the residents hidden. With many strange, unique creatures it becomes fairly obvious to the outside viewer that the magically oriented people has exerted influence back at the l and. Nevertheless, it is best to avoid entering Maeguelium unless an invitation is in order.

The Great Desert:Barren land expanding endlessly east. Although no one who has traveled the desert and returned alive there are some groups of peoples who claim to have originated from beyond the desert.

The Forbidden Zone: An area isolated and contained by all peoples of Merandii. Due to a magical incident 400 years ago the area became corrupted and perverse: all life was turned into undeath. The area is blocked and warded off and militant forces occupy in the area to ensure no threat manages to creep out to the populace.

Below are the cultural groups of Merandii. This is not a full representation of people who exist in the land: other races over time have integrated and made their way into the different societies.

Serperenians

User Image

Cold, dark, mischievous, the Serperenians have spent centuries in the cruel desert lands. Nationally they have adopted an overall stoicism and tolerance to negativity and hardships resulting in a lack of compassion. An easy observance of this can be seen by Serperenian politics by the nobility who, until recently, undermine each other using deceit to oust competition in order to advance their own power. Generally they hold favor toward technology involved with explosives and large flying zeppelins. Natural craftsmen, Seperenian goods are known to be of the highest quality: nothing less than perfection.

Que-Terrans
User Image
Charismatic, shrewd and outgoing, the sea-faring people with a knack in appraisal and bartering. Master traders, Que-Terrans tend to be where the money is. Generally with the technology / magic conflict Que-Terrans hold indifference to either side holding a mixture of each used in society. Although the people are tied to the sea, Que-Terrans have a tendency to domesticate flying creatures.

Ciendians

Pioneers into the world of technology, Ciendians started the Age of Steam and since then it's been their world. Industrious and innovative, their large cities and countless labs spawn over 80% of industry and research in Merandii. The most free and eccentric in thought, Ciendians live in a democratic government where the people use representatives to make many key decisions.

User Image
Maeguelians

A cloistered group, the Maeguelians are a diverse mixture of other cultures mixed into a new class. Opposition to the explosive expansion of the Age of Steam, the Maeguelians have isolated themselves as much as they could from the rest of the world and spend most of their time in three magic colleges where the Mage Council makes its decisions and plans. As their focus is on magic, they are sensitive to magic and capacity for using it. Trained for success, Maeguelians, in their quest for self-perfection, are often perceived as acting superior to other groups

User Image
Prointens

In the cold, harsh tundra of Prointum the people live daily struggling to survive. Very few are capable of a wealthy life. The majority are middle lower or lower class while they are held in power by the royalty who spend their time searching for adventure and escapes from politics. Even with the reduced society the people are culturally prominent. Many famous works of Merandii originated from Prointen hand, and loyalty is above all else to a Prointen making them the most worthwhile of friends.

Pacergnians

A once a calm and peaceful society of farmers, the Pacergnians thrived on the plentiful bounty of the land. Generally joyful, Pacergnians spend most of their time in entertainment venues when finished with the farm. Though with the recent invasion of Serperenians the people have slowly grown resentful over their forced rule and rumors of a resistance whisper here and there in the scattered taverns that are now a sullen place: a loss from the usual jolly and friendly atmosphere.
"Heh-heh-heh-eh-eh"
David chuckled to himself as the effects of inebriation kicked in. Just days into down ago David was successful in vending off little nick knacks to the people and soldiers. Both seemed to enjoy the toys as they helped preoccupy them from the war on hand. With his leftover money he spent a hefty amount on the Pacergnian spirits famous from the area. Though with each drink he slipped away from remembering not to spend all of his money here so he could eat the next day.

(Edit)

Dapper Dabbler

Walking up from the cellar, Arina smiled as she looked at what she had held in her hand. A new weapon from her Alchemy lab in the depths of the basement. Just a little distraction should any soldiers try to find evidence that the tavern held and welcomed rebellious activity. She chuckled inwardly, thinking of the poor fools trying to keep her alchemy fire from spreading. Grabbing another bottle of wine, one that they had been steadily running out of, it looked like a normal day at the tavern. There were drunkards falling over themselves once more, Serperenian guards everywhere, making sure that there was still order there, though some of the drunkards were from their ranks. Arina couldn't help but laugh at the fact that it seemed as though they acted like nothing was happening. There was a war and none of them seemed to have any intention of fighting in it. The thought was just sad.
Arina let the thought run from her mind as she continued making her rounds, refilling drinks and making sure everyone's orders were at least getting ready to be made. That's all she could do at that point. She had just a few more hours until she would have to get off work to go and get things ready for the next "meeting." The resistance was going to talk about their next plan of action. Not that that would be able to do a whole lot, but it would at least get them organized, and that's what they needed at that point in time. She would just have to make sure that everything was done and taken control of before she left.
"Nuh-no shur. I shwear I'm not drunkh."
Paul insisted to the Serperenian officer who was escorting him out of the bar seeing that he was slowly getting belligerent towards..well...everyone. When Paul entered that one sweet spot of being wasted he was not the best guy out there. Fortunately at that point he was also harmless to everyone buy himself.Being tossed outward into the dusty, dirty streets he passed out on impact making one last mumble as he lost consciousness.
"Ngh"
It was late in the evening by now. Paul had woken up in his drunken stupor still lying on the street. Fortunately yet unfortunately no one robbed him nor helped him as he lay there. Tch, so much for kindness abundant.

Paul moved up off the ground and lurched forward grabbing at his back aching from the uncomfortable position. Though it wasn't that bad seeing that the alcohol hadn't entirely left him, but now was only a buzz. Wanting to completely annihilate the pain from his back, he moved back to the inn, not noticing it near empty as many residents had went to the rebellion meeting inside, and began to search for someone.
